School carpooling done right: Learnings from a school in Virginia

The Challenge

Cornerstone Academy, a rural school in Virginia with 536 students, was looking for an innovative transportation solution to help families overcome the challenges of long distances, limited public transit options, and high fuel costs. The school wanted to make it easier for families to share rides and reduce the burden of driving on individual households.

The Solution

In August 2023, Cornerstone Academy partnered with Gokid to launch a school-wide carpooling program. Gokid provided a customized platform, training and support for administrators and families, and ongoing marketing and outreach to encourage participation.

The Results

  • Immediately after the launch of the program, 132 families (representing 41% of the student population) had registered for the Gokid platform, with only 9 families opting out.
  • During the course of the 2023/24 school year Cornerstone Academy families scheduled 55 regular carpools, resulting in 5,473 scheduled trips over the course of the school year.
  • By facilitating ride-sharing among families, Gokid helped to reduce the number of cars on the road, saving an estimated 27,365 miles of driving.
  • Gokid’s platform also helped to strengthen community connections and social capital among Cornerstone Academy families.
