Youth Lacrosse Tournament Rules
ILLEGAL DEFENSIVE POSITIONING
There is great emphasis on illegal defensive positioning to minimize injuries and prevent creating more fouls. For an illegal defensive positioning to occur the attack should create an opportunity. Firstly the ball must be above the goal line and within the scoring area. And second, the attacker must have the potential to shoot. If there is no opportunity to shoot, the call should not be made.
CONTACT IN MIDFIELD
Rough or dangerous plays disrupt the flow of the games and put the players at risk for injury. Contact that occurs when an opponent is thrown off their position or path is illegal contact. Deliberate illegal contact must be carded.
CHECK TO THE HEAD
Defenders who penetrate the space and throat area should be announced as a major foul. Repetition of this foul should be carded. A check to the head is a mandatory card.
PROFESSIONALISM
The committee reminds all players and coaches to avoid the use of excessive dissent or foul language and to be seated in their respective areas. The committee encourages calm patient motivating behavior from coaches players and officials alike.
Advice For Lacrosse Parents
- Enjoy yourself and have fun !! Lacrosse is an exciting sport to watch. It is much better than watching spring baseball where your child stands around for the whole game and only gets to bat a least times.
- If possible try to start practicing lacrosse with your child from an early age ( ie. first-grade lacrosse ) because this sport requires strong stick skills which will give an advantage to the player’s development in lacrosse.
- Attend your child’s practice sessions and matches! You can get to know your child’s weak areas and where he/she needs improvement. Moreover, your presence can boost your child’s confidence and get major cheer to perform better.
- Go out and practice lacrosse with your child. You can’t always rely on coaches to get your child ready as they are already dealing with many other kids and their demanding parents.
- Learn the words and terms used in lacrosse gameplay. Will help to understand opponents and teammates, during play and also be able to decrypt what others are yelling from the sidelines.
- Lacrosse game involves a lot of running, work on your child’s endurance and agility. Participation in off-season sports such as track, soccer, or basketball will help to build speed, footwork, agility, and endurance for the spring lacrosse season.
- An alternate solution for parents while practicing – Consider using a tennis ball or roll lacrosse ball so you don’t get smashed by a hard lacrosse ball.
- Parents while selecting lacrosse clubs should consider the experience and the quality time the coach gives an individual kid over the popularity of the club and people associated with the club.
- Allow your kids to practice lacrosse with full gear on so that they get comfortable passing/catching equipment. It will also prevent them from injury due to a misplaced pass.
- Encourage your child to join summer lacrosse camps held especially for youth. Try to engage in local lacrosse sessions held by the school to shake off the rust, and work on their skills for tidy preparation for the upcoming youth lacrosse season.
- Don’t worry if your child is not on the successful path of becoming great at lacrosse. Kids mature at different rates.
- As a parent prepare yourself to deal with coaches’ kids as many coaches run a youth lacrosse program and give preference to their kids.
- Also, be prepared for “ball hogs” in lacrosse. While your son is playing correctly giving passes to open man, you can also get to watch some kids refusing to pass making solo runs, taking on opposition defenders for goals which can also result in loss of possession. Don’t worry coaches have a solution for that but also try to teach your kids that it’s a team sport and cannot be won solo.
- By 5th or 6th grade let your kids decide on primary spring sports as coaches won’t take absentees for other sports events.
- This sport can be expensive due to equipment prices. Attackers usually prefer lighter sticks while defenders favor a stronger one. To save money parents should consider buying cheap aluminum sticks until their kids are truly committed to playing lacrosse at one position for the long term.
- Bond with other parents on the sidelines as they can give tips for practicing lacrosse with kids at home or carpool to lacrosse games and practice sessions.
- Lacrosse games are played outside and usually lack seating arrangements. As a parent, don’t forget to bring a camping chair, sunglasses, a hat, and plenty of water which can keep you and your little champ hydrated throughout the game.
- An important note is don’t be demanding parents and think twice before sending complaint emails or bombing emails (ie. Why my kid is not in the traveling team?). Understand that some coaches at the junior level are deployed unpaid, are also a parent, have their own overwhelming family lives, and knows which kid has earned its place in the lineup.
- Keep in mind that lacrosse players don’t need to be super tall unlike basketball or muscular like soccer players. Small and average-sized kids can become the best players on the team with great stick skills and plenty of hustle which can be gained through hard work, practice, determination, and passion for the sport.
